Genesys Regional Medical Center (GRMC) offers one of the largest family medicine residency training programs in the nation. Genesys is proud of its long tradition of training physicians in the practice of family medicine dating back to its program’s inception in 1971. The Genesys program is one of the most innovative residencies in the nation and graduates of our program are highly recruited upon graduation. Our program’s training embraces the broad spectrum of family practice -- from inpatient care to ambulatory settings.
Genesys has taken an additional step to set our program out from the others going INTERNATIONAL! As of February 2010, Genesys has embarked upon a new and exciting project in China. This project is designed to help transform the Chinese medical system from a specialty based care approach to a primary care based approached to providing medical care. The program represents a partnership between GRMC and Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital (SRRSH) located in the Zhejiang Province of the People's Republic of China. The goal of this partnership is to help SRRSH establish a family practice residency program that meets the standards of the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education.
Through the partnership, GRMC sends Genesys Family Medicine faculty members to SRRSH to help build and design its family medicine program. This is being accomplished by training SRRSH’s family medicine department faculty members, some of the community physicians and their family medicine residents.
This unique partnership offers Genesys Family Medicine Residency Program residents and Michigan State University College of Human Medicine’s medical students the opportunity to travel to China for an elective with their room and board free of charge to them. The objectives of this elective rotation in China includes allowing residents and students the opportunity to learn different disease spectrums, experience Chinese culture in the setting of practicing medicine, be able to witness how medical care is delivered in a country where primary care still does not really exist, exchange your knowledge with the Chinese counterpart and to see how alternative medicine, such as traditional Chinese medicine, is integrated in their day-to-day medical practice.
